I often do a sketch before starting a painting, especially if the composition is complicated, or I want to try multiple compositions from one reference photo. This is the sketch I did for "Near Rasteau" and the original photo taken from the passenger seat.
I so enjoy seeing artist's sketches of scenes/subjects they are going to paint. I too enjoy sketching out the subject before painting. I find that it makes things easier to keep track of. I'll be waiting to see the painting of this scene.

Wow, very cool. The sketch is so much better than the real view. Is that why they call it reference photo?
