I was back at Cove Road in South Freeport last month, grappling with the mud at low tide. And I had plenty of company, with the clammers out in force. I think what they were doing was harder than what I was doing.

 A clammer, it's hard work! And a long slog back to the grass.

This afternoon it was windy, so I painted from the shelter of the path down to Sandy Point Beach on Cousin's Island. I was tempted to put in a few people, but none stayed long enough. A couple of young women headed out to one of the islands in kayaks for a last overnight before it gets too cold. Good for them!

It was so beautiful outside, and nice and cool this morning, so off I went with my plein air gear. My first stop was South Freeport Harbor, where I spent a couple of hours making a mess (which I wiped off). I was painting on a pier, and the best I can say is that I didn't drop anything in. Next, off to Cove Road, where I was attracted to the rocks that make up the rip rap keeping this little peninsula from being eroded into the Harraseeket River. And of course the view beyond them is nothing to sneeze at!

The scene at the Cribworks

On Wednesday I drove to Millinocket Maine, to participate in the Katahdin Paint Out sponsored by Marsha Donahue and the North Light Gallery. I'd never been there before, and hadn't seen the mountain that I'd heard so much about. More about that tomorrow!

Marsha did such a good job for us, with organization, food and drink, and teaming those of us from away with local painters. Yesterday I went on a great tour with Candy McKellar and Peter Yesis, thanks Candy! We saw some beautiful places to paint, and spent some quality painting time at the Cribworks on the Golden Road. I was a bit overwhelmed by the scene, with the mountain, the cliffs, the trees, and the rushing water. People are not so intimating! So I quickly sketched in one of the other painters and did a value under painting. It only took a few minutes to paint the figure, but the rest was another story. Especially the foamy rushing water. I think I finally pulled it together.

After painting the four 10 minute mandarins, I set up this pair connected by a bunch of leaves, and went for it. I think the practice on the four 10 minute guys made a huge difference in this painting. I'll try to take a picture with less glare in the daylight.

I fell in love with this bright blue lobster boat in Stonginton. When I saw her headed for the dock, I knew something good was going to happen. Well, I might have painted the lobster shack a little redder than it really was...

This weekend I finished a painting that I started en plein air in September. When the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast visited, after one of our morning painting sessions and a great lunch at Oliver's in Cozy Harbor, Ann Self offered to show me another part of the village. And guess who were already there? Colin Page, Anne Blair Brown, and Andre Lucero! A couple of weeks later the sun and the tide converged and I was back. After two plein air sessions, I learned I'd been parking in someone's driveway, oops. And thus, the plein air painting was completed in the studio.

This is my final painting for Leslie Saeta's 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge. I've painted 30 and shown you 28 of them (2 failed quality assurance!). I want to thank you all for your patience and perseverance, and for all the wonderful comments. I do have a question, for a potential next time. Were there too many posts? Would fewer posts per week with more than one painting in each make for better viewing? Thanks so much for your help.

The 6"x6" and 5"x7" paintings done in September will be priced at $100 through October 1st, and on the 2nd, will go up to the normal $150 price.
